Karl Lagerfeld—fashion mega-mogul, Chanel’s visionary creative director and now magazine editor. The jack-of-all-trades is the guest editor for the May issue of Architectural Digest France. Turns out this isn’t his first editing gig, after stints at Metro and French Elle the old pro felt right at home dishing about interior design and decorative arts with Marie Kalt, editor-in-chief. In the editor’s letter he says life is like a Russian doll: “We are at the heart of a Russian doll: first the clothes, then the apartments and houses…Even the streets and the cities are part of the evolution of our preferences and our taste.”

The 220-page issue provides an intimate view of Lagerfeld’s futuristic flat on the Quai Voltaire in Paris. His ultramodern living room is featured on the cover, and if you look hard enough you will see that Karl is too. Also featured are works from designers and architects Lagerfeld admires such as Zaha Hadid, Martin Szekely, and Francois Morellet. Included in the issue are a feature on lap pools, a celebration of the late interior designer Elsie de Wolfe, and his choice of 20 cutting edge chairs out of a lot of 140.
